Travel maps
A holiday is always exciting to think about, especially if it is to a wonderful place which you have only dreamed of hitherto! But to enjoy all the benefits that the place has to offer, especially if it is an international arena where local information might be hard to come by, you need some advance planning and travel maps. People only think of guidebooks, never of maps. Think of all the advantages they can provide. In case you are lost, the travel map is there to take you to the right place. You can explore the unknown and find places not even listed in the guidebook. Additionally, travel maps prove to be very informative and come at a low cost, plus they are portable.
One of the biggest reasons that people do not buy travel maps is because they often do not know how to select the right map and make good use of it. The purpose of travel maps is to provide information about the area covered so that the user can locate any feature shown. The scale of a map is an indication of how much detail the map contains. Large-scale maps have the most detail while smaller-scale maps contain less detail but usually show a wider area.
There are certain symbols shown on the travel maps. These are depicted in the cartographer’s shorthand. That means a box or legend explains the meaning of each symbol. so once the legend is found, the symbol can be decoded easily. There are travel maps that are so detailed that they give guidance regarding every main building and every street with its name. And there are others that are interested in showing only the entertainment avenues, restaurants and hotels. Some travel maps depict historical and cultural sites. Unnecessary details are dispensed with while places of interest are pointed out. What is depicted on the travel map depends on the cartographer and the publisher. They do not follow any conventions, but go by their own particular style.
For the traveler, most travel maps that they will choose will either be topographical or thematic, or a combination of the two. Topographic maps shown the general ‘lie of the land’, featuring physical features, type of terrain, location of water sources, forests, marshes, roads, railways, and other lines of communication, be they man-made or natural.
What are thematic maps? These are trekking and tourist maps. While trekking maps give trekking routes covering rivers, canyons, ridges and settlements on the route, tourist maps are quite different. A tourist map depicts main roads, frequently used sites and walks. Museums, beaches, main cities and picnic areas–can be found on a tourist map. They are not really concerned with showing geographical areas in detail. The trekking maps act as guides for well-known routes. If the adventurer wants to go off into unknown areas, he is advised to choose a more detailed map.
So now that you are familiar with the scale and features of travel maps, compare the various kinds of maps, and choose what suits your holiday plans the best!
